Snow is not Snow and Aberdeen is likely to get it on Christmas Day. Odds Slashed, Banged & Walloped

Snow is not Snow and Aberdeen is likely to get it on Christmas Day.
Snow on Christmas Day?  A total mugs bet right?  Wrong.  The big day may be well over three weeks away but freezing temperatures in the UK and a cold snap on the run-up to the festive period have become more inevitable than possible during the past decade.

That does not guarantee a white Christmas but what is a ‘White Christmas’?  For most a White Christmas means a complete covering of snow on Christmas Day but the official definition by the British Met Office, which is what British bookmakers use to settle bets, is an observation of snow falling (even if it melts before it reaches the ground) during the 24 hours of December 25th.

That’s right, one flake of snow at 3.30am and Christmas Day will be declared to be a White Christmas.  Basically rain with a two-degree ground temperature will suffice.  However, snow that is laid on the ground from heavy snow fall from a few days beforehand, will not constitute a ‘White Christmas’.

Never one to exaggerate, albeit he’s banged the “will cost the industry a million pounds” drum to death, Rupert Adams of William Hill and a White Christmas tale from the past

Worry not about the technicalities.  These stats between 1950 and 2006 show the percentage of years which featured an official white Christmas in UK:

London           6%
Birmingham   15%
Belfast            22%
Glasgow         35%
Aberdeen       53%.

These percentages, despite the climate warming an additional degree Fahrenheit during the past decade, clearly auger well for snow landing on Scotland’s third city, Aberdeen this and every year.  It’s roughly 50/50 or an even-money shot.  But, remarkably, BetVictor are offering 5/2 about a snow-flake being sighted over Aberdeen which is way out of line with the true probability of the potential outcome.  Their 6/1 about Birmingham seeing some snow on Christmas Day is in line with probability but BetVictor’s 11/4 about snow on Glasgow also has appeal as a betting proposition.
