Kane Overtakes Thomas as 6/4 Sports Personality Favourite

Harry Kane has overtaken his fellow sports stars in the betting to become the new favourite for the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award ahead of this weekend’s bash.  The Tottenham striker notched six goals at the World Cup in Russia to finish the tournament as top goal scorer and with just days to go before the winner is revealed, he has been backed into 6/4 from 5/2 with BoyleSports to make him the front-runner for the prize.

Previous favourite Geraint Thomas, who will seek to following the footsteps recent Welsh winners Joe Calzaghe and Ryan Giggs, is Kane’s nearest rival in the betting but has drifted out to 9/4 from 6/4 for the accolade having taken the Yellow Jersey on the podium in Paris at this year’s Tour De France.

Tyson Fury claimed ‘the world knows who the real champion is’ after his controversial draw with Deontay Wilder and the outspoken boxer has made a late charge up the betting, closing into 5/1 from 33/1 in the week following the split decision in Los Angeles.  The only other candidate in single figures is 4/1 shot Lewis Hamilton who drew level with the legendary Juan Manuel Fangio when he claimed his fifth Formula One Drivers’ World Championship this season.

Lawrence Lyons, spokesperson for BoyleSports said: “There’s no runaway favourite for the Sports Personality award this time and with the nominees only being announced on the night, the betting has been spread over a handful of candidates.”  He added: “Harry Kane is our new favourite as he has edged the betting in recent days, but Geraint Thomas remains a lively contender and there has been plenty of money over the last week for Tyson Fury too, so our market remains wide open at this stage.”

If the award really is wide-open Cash Drop Betting still believes Jonathan Rea has a great chance of making the podium while snooker star Ronnie O’Sullivan could be another interesting contender following his record seventh win in the UK Championship over the weekend.  1988 Sports Personality of the Year winner Steve Davis was one of the first to urge the ‘powers above’ to add O’Sullivan to the list of nominations which will not be made public until awards night.
